North Metro Fire Rescue District is celebrating Fire Prevention Week Oct. 5-12 with interactive activities to help families understand the importance of fire safety in the home.
Beginning on Saturday, Oct. 5, the fire district will host a Fire Safety Fair for kids at FlatIron Crossing Mall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kids will learn about smoke alarms and what to do when they sound. They’ll also tour through an inflatable house and learn how to avoid safety hazards in the home and practice crawling out if there’s a fire. Kids will also practice with firefighters calling 911 and relaying their address and emergency. The event will take place at the feature court outside of Helzberg Diamonds.
On Tuesday, Oct. 8, fire and life safety education specialists from North Metro Fire will bring their special puppet “Dusty” for story time at the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Library in Broomfield, beginning at 10 a.m. They will host two story time sessions, with the second session beginning at 10:45 a.m.
The week will wrap up on Saturday, Oct. 12, as North Metro Fire hosts a Fire Safety Open House and hot dog cookout at Station 63, located at 10941 Irma Dr. in Northglenn. The fire district will have its inflatable safety house set up and 911 practice center. Residents also will be invited to tour the station and fire engine and enjoy hot dogs with the firefighters. The District will be distributing free smoke and carbon monoxide alarms provided by Kidde to anyone needing one for their home.
This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape™.” Today’s home fires burn faster than ever. In a typical home fire, a family may have less than two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. North Metro Fire wants to educate its residents on the importance of practicing evacuation drills as a family and knowing two ways out of any given area of the home.
