The saying goes, ‘the kitchen is the heart of the home.’ It also happens to be the place where most fires and injuries occur in the home. North Metro Fire is kicking off Fire Prevention Week, October 7-14, with fun activities to teach families how to stay safe and avoid injuries and fires while cooking. We hope you join us at one of our open houses and cookouts. In the meantime, remember these important tips from the National Fire Protection Association to prevent an emergency.
- Always keep a close eye on what you’re cooking. For foods with longer cook times, such as those that are simmering or baking, set a timer to help monitor them carefully.
- Keep the cooking area clear of anything that can burn, such as dish towels, oven mitts, food packaging, and paper towels.
- Keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.
- If you have a fire in your microwave or oven, turn it off immediately and keep the door closed until the fire is out. Have the appliance serviced before using it again.
- Create a “kid and pet free zone” of at least three feet around the cooking area and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried.
- If a fire starts, get everyone out of the house immediately and call 911.
- If you get a minor burn, run the area under cool water for 3–5 minutes. Cover with a clean, dry cloth. If the burn is bigger than your fist, or if you have questions about caring for the injury, get medical help right away.
