Hazardous Materials
With the requirement that every firefighter at North Metro be trained to handle hazardous material events at the Operations-level, North Metro firefighters are prepared to deal with materials containment, evacuation, and minimization of long-term effects at hazardous material incidents. In addition to minimum training levels, 31 of the District’s firefighters and staff personnel are certified to advanced Hazardous Material Technician-level. This advanced training allows the HazMat Team to handle more dangerous and more sophisticated chemical spills in compliance with federal certification requirements and safety regulations.
Through North Metro’s involvement with the Adams/Jefferson County HazMat Authority, our department has experienced an increase in activity with other local and regional responders in dealing with illegal methamphetamine drug lab response throughout the North area. Team members and senior staff were also very heavily involved in developing regional response protocols in cooperation with the members of the North Metro Drug Task Force for the Adams/Jefferson HazMat Authority.
