Youth

More Than Fire Safety—LIFE SAFETY!
Developing appropriate life safety skills needs to begin early to ensure our youth get to be grown ups! That’s why North Metro Fire Rescue’s programs focus on the unintentional injury hazards that we see each day. Our goal is to help kids prevent mishaps and deal with emergencies when they occur. Our most comprehensive program, Risk Watch®, is conducted through a partnership with our schools. This 4 session program covers everything from fall prevention to water safety to fire/burn prevention —and every 3rd grader in the District receives this education and the program has recently expanded to 5th grade. Additional programs for kids include:

Juvenile Firesetter Program
Playing With Fire...A Dangerous Game!
Everyone in the community including parents, fire and police departments, teachers, churches, and the medical community need to be involved to help youth who set fires. Curiosity about fire is natural for children, setting fires is not!
North Metro Fire Rescue encourages parents to call us for help immediately if you have or know of a child that is experimenting with fire and accelerants. A FREE program to educate youth in a safe, one-on-one environment is offered to kids up to age 17. This program is designed to deter and educate children in the dangers of fire play before problems reach a point that result in intentional juvenile fire setting.

Some signs parents should look for to spot fire play include:
• Burn spots on carpet or furniture.
• Burned paper or ashes under a bed, in the trash or around a desk.
• Burn spots in the yard around school, home or open space.
• Missing matches or lighters.
• Missing aerosol cans, gasoline, alcohol products or chemicals.
• Stories from your children’s friends or siblings.
• Reports of fire activity from school officials or activity leaders.

Risk Watch® to all 3rd grade & 5th grade
Since 2000, North Metro Fire Rescue has implemented the Risk Watch® Program in coordination with all elementary schools in the Fire District. The program is a professionally developed program that targets specific age groups. Currently NMFR is targeting 3rd graders and 5th graders. The program is designed to prevent commonly found unintentional injuries within the age group. Throughout the year students learn about life-safety topics including: fire & burn prevention, falls prevention, water safety and bike & pedestrian safety.

Car Passenger Seat Safety Education
Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 cause of death from unintentional injuries for children and adults, ages 1-34 (Source: Center for Disease Control.) While some crashes are not survivable, over 57% of deaths for children 0-15 occurred because the child was unrestrained. Many more were improperly restrained. Nationally, the misuse rate of child safety seats is 90%, yet in Colorado checkpoints have shown that over 91% of the people attending our checkpoints do not have their child safety seats properly installed.
