Blood Pressure Checks
North Metro Fire Rescue needs your help in reducing heart disease and strokes in our community by coming in for a FREE blood pressure. You will receive a monitoring card to keep track of any changes in your blood pressure.
High blood pressure (hypertension) occurs when the body's smaller blood vessels narrow, which causes the blood to exert excessive pressure against the vessel walls. In turn, the heart must work harder to maintain this higher pressure. In time, this increased blood pressure can enlarge and damage the heart as well as blood vessels. High blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke. In addition, high blood pressure can also lead to severe headaches, visual disturbances, paralysis, seizures and cardiac disease.

File of Life Program
The File of Life is a red, magnetic packet that contains important medical information about you and your family. The File of Life also provides an area to list contact information for your doctor and family members that emergency personnel should know while caring for you.

Who should fill one out?
Senior adults, however, the File of Life is for people of all ages, especially individuals with chronic or severe medical conditions and/or developmental disabilities.

Where should I put it once I fill it out?
The red, magnetic packet(s) should be hung on the outside, front of the refrigerator.

A few things to remember when using the "File of Life":
· Record the information in pencil. Updates and revisions can be made as necessary.
· The information is only useful if it is updated frequently. Participants are urged to maintain current information regarding medication and dosages.

To obtain a File of Life at no charge, please call 720-887-0404

Smoke Alarm Program
North Metro Fire Rescue District will offer senior citizens, residents of the District with limited income, or residents with special needs, a smoke alarm at no charge. In addition, the District offers assistance with the installation of this smoke alarm.

The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) reports that 40% of all home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms. Furthermore, 23% of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes in which smoke alarms were present but did not operate. The death rate per 100 reported fires was twice as high in homes without a working smoke alarm as it was in home fires with this protection.

Please contact 720-887-0404 to ask questions, receive a smoke detector, or make an appointment to have your smoke detectors installed.

Let's Retire Fire
This program benefits the older citizens of the District. The fact is that persons over the age of 65 are at a greater risk of death from fire than any other age group in the United States (United States Fire Administration). Fire drills and other fire safety issues are addressed in the curriculum. North Metro Fire Rescue is proud to report that since the program was implemented, it has been credited to saving the lives of 50 district citizens!
