Nine candidates are running this spring to fill two board of director positions for North Metro Fire Rescue District. Additionally, residents will have the opportunity to vote on a ballot question that, if approved, would extend term limits to three consecutive terms. Voters will have a chance to vote on the board candidates and ballot issue when the District’s election is held on May 8, 2018.
The candidates running to fill the two board positions are:
- Peter J. Billera, Broomfield
- Hasim Blair, Northglenn
- Stephen R. Blount, Broomfield
- Alejandro Juarez, Broomfield
- Thomas Mahoney, Broomfield
- Richard J. Miller, Broomfield
- Joseph Laurence Perrotto III, Broomfield
- Rob Shively, Broomfield
- Ashley Witkovich, Northglenn
The ballot question voters will consider is the following:
Shall the limit on the number of consecutive terms in office for the members of the board of directors of the North Metro Fire Rescue District be increased from two consecutive terms to three consecutive terms pursuant to Article XVIII, Section 11(2) of the Colorado Constitution?
Under current law, board members serve a four-year term and must be re-elected by voters to a second term. If the ballot issue passes, board members could serve up to three consecutive terms. However, they must still be re-elected by voters to each term.
North Metro Fire’s board members work collaboratively with staff to set the strategic direction and vision for the fire district. Additionally, they are responsible for approving the District’s budget, large contracts, guidelines and bylaws for the District, and fire codes and fees for services provided by North Metro Fire.
The board usually meets the third Tuesday of every month at 5 p.m., with a few additional meetings held during the year for specific purposes.
For those wishing to vote by absentee ballot, an application may be downloaded from the District’s website or picked up during business hours at North Metro Fire’s Headquarters located at 101 Spader Way, Broomfield, Colorado 80020. Absentee ballot applications must be received at the Headquarters location in Broomfield by the close of business on May 1. North Metro Fire will begin mailing absentee ballots to applicants on April 9 or within 72 hours of receipt of the application. Absentee ballot voters must have their ballots in to North Metro Fire’s Headquarters by 7 p.m. on May 8.
In lieu of absentee voting, all residents may choose to vote in person on the day of the election by going to a voting location on May 8 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to cast their vote.
